The Western & Atlantic Railroad tunnel in Tunnel Hill was the last link built in the railroad between Chattanooga, TN, and Atlanta, GA. It took two crews on either side of the Chetoogetta Mountain two years to excavate the tunnel and set the stone and brick. As trains grew longer and larger, the tunnel was shut down in the 1930s so a second tunnel could be built next to it. Today, if you are in the historic tunnel while a train passes through the active one you won’t feel or hear the train until it has passed by!
