Before the days of the big box retail store, the general store was one of the most important aspects of life in 1800’s America. Here in Tunnel Hill, freight trains from Atlanta and Chattanooga passing through the W&A Railroad tunnel would bring in crates of goods to be sold in the local store – from coffee to paint to tobacco, and much more! Larger items like tubs and farm equipment could be ordered via the printed catalogs and shipped to the store for pick up.
